In This Article

Security in a museum or gallery needs to accommodate the visitor experience alongside the institution's collection responsibilities. For an exhibition venue in Ankara, discuss installation, dismantling and collection movements as well as public opening hours. The people present and the owners of individual tasks change between these periods.

Separate guarding from conservation

The Canadian Conservation Institute describes specialist services that consider buildings, environmental conditions and collection-care practices together. This is a useful reference when considering why collection protection cannot be assigned solely to guarding staff. It is not Turkish museum legislation or evidence of a qualification held by Titan.

An officer may report an observed condition to the appropriate contact; they should not independently decide on restoration, environmental adjustments or an object's valuation. Define communication between the curator, conservator, facilities team and security supervisor according to the actual assignment.

Treat exhibition changeovers as a distinct operating period

External teams may work in areas closed to visitors while a new exhibition is installed. Our editorial recommendation is to establish who approves their attendance and who communicates changes to the work. Having worked on the previous exhibition should not automatically count as approval for the next one.

  • Which contact authorises the installation team?
  • Which institutional representative attends object or equipment handovers?
  • Who communicates temporary changes in visitor areas?
  • Who receives unresolved matters when the work ends?

Explain visitor rules clearly

Photography, bag admission and group-visit arrangements may differ between exhibitions. Officers should explain the institution's current instructions rather than inventing rules from personal preference. Discuss coordination with the relevant museum team for school groups, visitors requiring assistance and guided tours.

When recording a complaint or a disagreement about a rule, describe the time, observed circumstances and contact approached rather than making judgements about someone's appearance. Visitor communication is also a visible expression of the institution's approach to public service.

Explain what a handover record establishes

A security log showing that a package reached an authorised recipient does not establish that a specialist has examined the artwork inside. Condition reporting and transport responsibility belong to the relevant professionals and contracting parties. Distinguish observation, recording, escorting and acceptance approval when evaluating the proposal.

For an initial discussion with Titan Savunma, provide the exhibition calendar, public opening hours and responsible institutional contacts. Sensitive collection locations and detailed protective arrangements need not be entered in an open enquiry form; agree an appropriate discussion channel separately.
